What Why How What-if
This project is designed to help you define and articulate your Unit Two/Unit Three MA
question: your subject area, motivation, methodology and research strategy. The plan for
your MA journey is made up of four principal elements: What-Why-How-What If. These
elements should all be informed by your personal goals and passions. They should be
based on real and important questions (for you and for others), and should define a
strategy which allows for rigorous external verification of your ideas, by the use of
iterative and frequent testing through purposeful change. The “What-Why-How-What If”
headings represent four distinct aspects of your proposed project, but each component of
your proposal should add up to a clear and coherent vision for your MA journey.
WHAT:
What is the subject or area that you intend to research?
What is the precise
question that you will be addressing?
WHY:
Why will this research be of value to you - and the world?
HOW:
How will you accomplish your project in practical terms?
What will be your
methodology, management strategy, and schedule?
WHAT IF:
What are the positive implications and potential if you achieve this mastery?
How will this position you (and your stakeholders) at the end of the Course?
A typical WHAT-WHY-HOW-WHAT IF proposal will devote most space to the ‘HOW?’, but
all of the elements should be carefully considered and discussed. All of these individual
elements are interrelated, and will function together as a whole to articulate your
concept. Please also include a proposed reading list that will inform and support your
secondary research.
Early Intervention
A representation or example of an artefact, event or process that you plan to use in
research encounters with stakeholders. You should be ready to present or demonstrate
this intervention at the class of 16 May. We will also be asking you to hand-in the
completed version of your Learning Agreement with the final draft of your WHAT-WHYHOW-WHAT IF proposal. This is not an assessed deliverable in itself, but it provides a key
context in which tutors can evaluate the approach you plan to take in your research and
learning.
MY FINAL WORK
I remember that when I applied for this course, the subject of the study proposal was asked to submit was "How to use creativity to make the world a better place". So the goal I set for myself was to do a project that was socially responsible and related to my undergraduate clothing design major, so I decided to see how making clothing evolves into the concept of wearable devices that can help people stay healthy and safe. When I am fortunate to be here to study, I have not forgotten my original intention to continue to stick to the main body of the project I originally wanted to do. Of course, I also injected some new inspiration and new project ideas after the study of unit 1.
When I conceived Project 5, “The Change I Want to See," I focused to make wearables to protect the elderly because my grandparents often had issues with falling or getting lost; I gave them existing tech products - older smartphones, which have limitations in practice, so I've been trying to find a new way to solve this problem, which is to turn clothing into wearables. But when I conducted in-depth research, I found that many big companies have similar ideas. For example, the 5G smart T-shirt developed by ZTE and the flexible fabric display developed by Fudan University can detect abnormalities in the elderly and automatically call emergency calls, ETC… Based on this research, I think that the existing technology can already make clothing into wearable devices, and there are many other social issues that have not been paid attention to, and there are many protective measures that need to be subdivided, for example, I saw in the news cases of child sexual assault.
In a 2018 UNICEF report, children around the world, experience more violence than imagined, with girls or boys being forced to have sex – children can be exposed to all kinds of violence anytime, anywhere. ” And the current solutions to this problem are limited.
(WHY)
So I finally settled on my specific research question: how to protect children under 14 from sexual assault through wearable devices.
(WHAT)
My idea started with "notifications". Once the wearable detects an abnormal touch or vital sign, the guardian will be notified and warned of the situation. Guardian information filtering is more flexible than direct alarm settings, which can prevent accidental touches. However, if there is a problem with the guardian's link, further protection is still required. I will continue to research this issue.
(HOW)
The areas I want to investigate further in the future are new types of fabrics for clothing, how to maintain comfort after clothing becomes a wearable device and a case study of sexual assault of minors under the age of 14. I think because the project that I want to do is complex and diverse And the professional span is very large, I need multiple parties and professionals to communicate and cooperate. For example, I think the resource platform of our school can provide me with a lot of help. I learned that our school has a major in fabric innovation, and I will ask for advice later. I think this idea of mine has a strong sense of social responsibility. If the feasibility is confirmed, then the stakeholders will have government departments and parents who want to protect their children, and the market potential is huge.
